Gender Equity at EPB

At the Ecole polytechnique de Bruxelles, we know that engineering needs all talents, regardless of gender. However, women remain underrepresented in scientific and technical fields, even though Belgium and the European Union are experiencing a growing shortage of qualified professionals. To change this reality, we actively lead and support projects that encourage girls and women to pursue engineering studies and build careers in this field. Our goal is to open the doors of technology and innovation to everyone and make diversity a driving force for progress.

Gender Polyt-Equity

Created in 2021, the Gender Polyt-Equity Commission embodies the Ecole polytechnique de Bruxelles' commitment to true gender equality. Its mission is to promote and strengthen gender balance within the school, whether among students, academic and scientific staff, or administrative and technical personnel.
By taking action in the areas of recruitment, career development, and career advancement, the commission works concretely to ensure that diversity becomes a collective strength.
Each year, it organizes awareness-raising activities and high-profile events, including a flagship conference on International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11.

WomInTech

WomInTech is a student initiative at the École polytechnique de Bruxelles that works to promote greater gender diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. Throughout the academic year, it offers a BA1 mentoring program to help first-year students settle in, professional mentoring to encourage exchanges with working engineers, as well as conferences, workshops with companies, and speed networking events. These meetings provide an opportunity to talk to role models, discover different career paths, and reflect on the many facets of scientific and technical careers. WomInTech is also very active on social media, through educational posts, podcasts, and promoting its events. At the same time, the association is heavily involved with secondary and primary schools in order to raise awareness of STEM studies from an early age. Through these actions, WomInTech aims to encourage everyone to consider their place in STEM and to overcome gender stereotypes.

Gender equity in academic careers

The steering committee on gender equality in academic careers was officially established by the ULB Academic Council in December 2024, following the completion of the European CALIPER project. Its purpose is to continue to drive the University's policies on gender equality at all stages of a career (pathway: university studies - doctorate - post-doctorate - academic position - academic promotions).

Tasks:
  • Identify and analyze obstacles to gender equality in academic careers at ULB;
  • Formulate and propose projects at faculty and/or university level on this theme;
  • Act as a support committee for projects relating to this theme;
  • Encourage collaboration on these issues with other institutions in Belgium and abroad;
  • Monitor European gender policy in the European Research Area.
The Steering Committee makes proposals on issues that concern the institution to the Academic Council and/or the Board of Directors, where decisions on these matters are taken.
