Innovation

At the École Polytechnique de Bruxelles (EPB), innovation is at the heart of our scientific mission. Our researchers transform their research findings into concrete solutions for society, in collaboration with the economic, industrial, and entrepreneurial worlds.

From research to innovation

After a research and development phase, scientific results can be exploited in various ways:
  • Patent application to protect a technology or invention;
  • License agreement with an existing company to develop and market a product or service;
  • Creation of a spin-off, a company originating from university research, to directly exploit an innovation.

These different avenues make it possible to maximize the impact of the work carried out in EPB laboratories.

ULB supports scientific innovation

The EPB benefits from the active support of the Free University of Brussels to assist with its projects with high technological potential. This support is based on three key pillars:

1. The Technology Transfer Office (TTO): The ULB's TTO guides researchers in protecting their intellectual property, setting up industrial projects, and negotiating licensing agreements.
2. Incubators and support infrastructure: Several specialized incubators offer an ecosystem conducive to the creation and development of technology start-ups: 3. The Théodorus investment fund: Théodorus provides seed funding to finance the early stages of setting up a research-based business. It helps cover the risks associated with the launch phase and attract private investment.

EPB spin-offs

EPB actively participates in the creation of skilled jobs and the economic development of the Brussels-Capital Region and Wallonia.
In 20 years, more than 20 spin-offs have been created within our school, the vast majority of which are still active today. These companies embody the dynamism of research at EPB and its concrete impact on society.
