International Master in English in partnership with the VUB

The chemical engineer is involved in the development, production, marketing, treatment and recycling of all materials and products. Thanks to his mastery of chemistry, he/she understands the structure and properties of products and materials and models them according to user needs, while minimizing the environmental impact of manufacturing processes. Whether it is developing touch screens that require less resources, capturing CO2 or treating wastewater to extract rare metal particles, the chemical engineer fits into a dynamic of sustainable development.

Programme

The training starts in BA3 with a set of courses aimed at acquiring fundamental knowledge in molecular sciences as well as environmental sciences and manufacturing processes of products and materials.

The Master then offers a broad common core. It thus covers different areas of chemical and materials engineering, including fundamental properties of matter and environmental technologies, and is open to biotechnology and industrial safety issues. Students can also specialize in materials science or process engineering. The first option is devoted to the development of new products and materials, the second to chemical manufacturing processes. On the practical side, the first year offers the choice between a project carried out in a research laboratory, a development cooperation project and the team leader project. A 12-week internship in a company or research center and an end-of-studies dissertation complete the training.

What's next ?

Thanks to their in-depth knowledge of products, materials and processes, civil engineers in chemistry and materials science are highly sought after in the field of biotechnology, plastics, aeronautics, petrochemicals, new materials, energies, environment, agro-food, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnologies or cosmetics, at all stages of manufacturing: research and development, design, production, marketing, quality and safety control as well as recycling and environmental protection.

They can therefore work in large companies and industries as well as in design / consultancy offices, research centers, public services or NGOs.
